History
The Old Hall at Badminton Estate was originally used as the Refectory Hall. This was where the estate’s servants would gather for their meals. During the time of the 1st Duke of Beaufort, the hall played a central role in the household. It featured nine long tables, each designated for different groups. These included the Chief Steward with the gentlemen and pages, the Master of the Horses with the coachmen and grooms, and the Under-Stewards with the butlers. Other tables were for the clerks, kitchen staff, butchers, and brewers. This seating arrangement reflects the division of duties within the estate. It also highlights the distinct roles that supported the daily operations of the house. Over the years, The Old Hall has hosted various private events and filming. One of its most notable appearances was in the film Remains of the Day, starring Emma Thompson and Christopher Reeves. In the film, the hall served as the servants’ dining room.
