THe history of swangrove
Swangrove is a beautiful architectural folly, built in the early 1700s from local Cotswold stone and incorporating gables, distinctive roof castellations, and pepper pots. In 1703, the lodge was partially demolished and refashioned by Killigrew as a maison de plaisance for the 2nd Duke. Originally, Swangrove had been Sir Thomas Somerset’s hunting lodge, and the rear elevation mostly dates back to his time.
Inside, there are early chinoiserie decorations and a marble cistern with a Chinese head, created by John Harvey of Bath in 1706. The battlements were designed by Thomas Wright, who also designed the nearby Keeper’s House. Sir Thomas Somerset was the first to lay out Swangrove Wood, crisscrossing it with drives.
The wood was dry-walled in 1748, and from this period also dates Wright’s thatched Temple to Sylvanus—an arrangement of conjoined yew trees in a circle, long since gone.
