Celebrating nature, community, and the life-changing work of Horatio’s GardeN.
On April 29th, the Duchess of Beaufort, in partnership with Horatio’s Garden, hosted the inaugural Tulip Lunch at Badminton House. Guests enjoyed an exclusive tour of Badminton’s stunning tulip collection, led by the Duchess herself. All event proceeds benefited Horatio’s Garden, a charity dedicated to creating beautiful, accessible gardens in NHS spinal injury centres. These therapeutic spaces provide healing, dignity, and hope for those affected by life-changing injuries.
This charity holds a special place in our hearts as an estate. Many years ago, our former head gardener, Richard Priest, suffered a life-changing spinal injury. During that incredibly difficult time, Horatio’s Garden provided him with vital support, helping him navigate the challenges of his recovery. Through their care and dedication, Richard was able to reconnect with his passion for gardening; a passion that has always been at the heart of his life and work.

About Horatio’s garden
Horatio’s Garden was established by Dr. Olivia Chapple and spinal surgeon David Chapple FRCS, in memory of their son, Horatio. Tragically, Horatio lost his life at the age of 17 in 2011. He had dreamed of becoming a doctor and volunteered at the Duke of Cornwall Spinal Treatment Centre, where he noticed the lack of outdoor spaces for patients and their families. Inspired by his vision for a healing garden, his parents brought the idea to life. Today, Horatio’s legacy continues to transform hospital environments, enhancing the wellbeing of thousands of patients, families, and NHS staff throughout the UK.
The charity was founded with a vision to create sustainable, thriving communities and biodiverse gardens in all 11 NHS spinal injury centres across the UK. So far, they’ve built nine gardens in England, Wales, and Scotland. Each garden is uniquely designed by leading landscapers. These year-round gardens feature carefully selected plants, trees, and seasonal blooms. Wide, smooth paths allow patients in beds or wheelchairs to move freely. Architects and designers collaborate to create bright indoor spaces with calming garden views, regardless of the weather. These beautifully designed gardens provide immersive benefits through the sounds, smells, and sights of nature, offering a peaceful contrast to the wards for patients, families, and staff.
The Positive Impact of Horatio’s Garden on Recovery and Wellbeing
Each year in the UK, approximately 4,700 people experience a spinal cord injury. Initiatives like Horatio’s Garden have shown remarkable benefits for recovery and wellbeing, with 93%–100% of participants reporting improved mental health. Notably, 99% of NHS staff believe that patients with spinal injuries benefit from access to these therapeutic gardens. Complementing the natural healing environment, arts workshops within these spaces have further enhanced physical and emotional recovery. An impressive 96% of participants reported being distracted from pain during sessions, while 92% noted improved hand and arm strength. Additionally, 88% experienced better stamina, and 83% saw improvements in their balance—highlighting the powerful impact of creative engagement on rehabilitation.
