The North Hall

History

The North Hall is famous as the room where the game of Badminton was invented in 1863. The dimensions of the original badminton courts those in The Hall. The Hall is celebrated for its exquisite plasterwork and renowned paintings by John Wootton.

The hall was designed by James Gibbs in the 1730s, with plasterwork created by Charles Stanley and Giuseppe Artari. Charles Stanley is credited with the intricate plaster panels, which depict the Four Elements. These panels are placed under John Wootton’s paintings. Additionally, the putti resting on the pediments above the doorways hold emblems representing the arts, such as painting, sculpture, and music.

The four paintings by John Wootton around the room were commissioned specifically for this space by the 3rd Duke. These paintings, which still hang in the hall today, offer a seamless transition from the exterior to the interior. They depict various country pursuits, including stag-hunting at Badminton, hawking at Netheravon, hare-hunting on Salisbury Plain, and racing at Newmarket Heath. Notably, the painting above the chimneypiece portrays an Arabian horse called Grey Barb, which was imported to England by the 3rd Duke.

The original suite of seat furniture, designed in Kent’s style, remains in place, preserving the hall’s historical integrity.

In the 17th century, the hall was initially used as an entrance hall. However, during the time of the 8th Duke of Beaufort, it was transformed into a grand dining room. Today, the North Hall is used for private events and is available for exclusive hire.
